Series 9 Sonic Screwdriver to be released this summerBookmark and Share

Thursday, 12 May 2016 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Character have announced that they plan to release a toy version sonic screwdriver that made its debut during last year's series finale, Hell Bent:

Character: Series 9 Hell Bent Sonic Screwdriver: pack (Credit: Character)After months of speculation it is now official, the Twelfth Doctor’s Second Sonic Screwdriver is to be part of the Character Options’ toy collection. The first images have been released with confirmation that the eagerly awaited Sonic will be on sale within weeks!

This new toy version is a faithful recreation of the current Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver which debuted in the Series 9 Episode ‘Hell Bent’. This is the first Sonic to have 4 light modes and four sound FX. The model has been designed as a replica from the Series 9 Prop.

As all fans would know, the Doctor has carried many Sonic Screwdrivers of various designs throughout his lifetimes, ranging from a simple silver coloured tube to more complex illuminated and articulated versions.

This second Sonic for the Twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, was ‘gifted' to him by the TARDIS itself after his previous version was lost. Although we are yet to discover all of the new Sonic’s abilities, like the Doctor himself, it has become ever more complex and mysterious. This multipurpose tool features numerous settings and can open most locks, detect all manner of deadly rays, read bio-signs and generate Sonic waves of great power.

Alasdair Dewar, Head of Product Development at Character Options commented: “Since this Twelfth Doctor’s Second Sonic Screwdriver appeared at the end of series 9, we have been inundated by fan requests to produce a toy replica as part of our toy range. We are therefore very proud to finally be able to reveal it. The Sonic Screwdriver has historically been one of the most sought after toys for fans and collectors alike and we hope they will be as delighted with it as we are.”

The Character Options’ Twelfth Doctor’s Second Sonic Screwdriver is available from for pre-sale orders from Doctor Who merchandise retailers from today.

New Doctor Who figures at Toys “R” UsBookmark and Share

Wednesday, 28 October 2015 - Reported by Marcus
8th Doctor (Credit: Character Options ) Toys “R” Us has linked up with Character Options to bring a new collector’s series of figures that will be available only in Toys “R” Us Stores in the UK. The new collection of 11 Figures includes a never before seen Eighth Doctor Figure.

The new 5 inch figure series has been created in response to the demand from Doctor Who fans who are eager to see the return of the larger format. It will include:
  • Clara Oswald (played By Jenna Coleman) – the most recent time travelling companion of The Doctor
  • Rose Tyler (played By Billie Piper) with K9
  • Amy Pond (played by Karen Gillan) in her famed police outfit
  • Three separate Eleventh Doctor figures (played by Matt Smith): One in purple Jacket , another donning a cowboy hat as in Doctor Who - A Christmas Carol, and finally a classically posed Eleventh Doctor with a his ubiquitous Sonic device
  • Four versions of the current and Twelfth Doctor (played by Peter Capaldi) are also part of the line-up. Known for being a rather dapper Time Lord, there is a choice of figure in White, Black, Purple or Polka Dot shirt.
  • And last but definitely not least a brand new Eighth Doctor figure (played by Paul McGann) and as seen in the episode Night of The Doctor. The Eighth Doctor has never before been released individually in the 5 inch figure format.
Four 3.75 inch Wave 4 figures will also be available.

Al Dewar, Product Development Director, Character Options commented:
This collector’s series is really special. The fans have been requesting a return to the 5.5 inch format for a long time and in producing this collection I feel we have brought to them exactly what they have been demanding. The most exciting part for me however, is the creation of the Eighth Doctor figure, which is often seen as the missing piece for the true Doctor Who collector.
Mike Coogan, Marketing & eCommerce Director, Toy “R” Us further commented:
Toy “R” Us has a particular affinity with the Doctor Who fan and each year we like to bring to them something that they could not get anywhere else. This new series is exceptional and I believe one of the most comprehensive collector’s series to date - It will be an instant hit with all collectors.

Lego Doctor Who?Bookmark and Share

Wednesday, 26 February 2014 - Reported by Josiah Rowe
Many fans of Doctor Who and the Lego building toy sets have long wished for Doctor Who Lego toys. Now, a post on Lego's Cuusoo crowdsourcing design site suggests that Doctor Who Lego sets may be coming soon.

Lego Cuusoo is a crowdsourcing platform where people can submit and vote on designs for Lego toy sets. If a project receives 10,000 votes of support, it is considered by a Lego review board, which decides whether the project is suitable to be produced commercially. Previous sets which have made it through this process include sets based on the Mars Curiosity rover, Back to the Future, and Ghostbusters (available this summer).

In the past, Lego Cuusoo proposals based on Doctor Who have been rejected due to conflict with Character Building's license to produce Doctor Who toys. Character has produced Lego-compatible Doctor Who building toys since 2011. It is not known whether Character's license has changed or expired, but today Lego posted the following on the Lego Cuusoo website:
Sometimes we have to turn down project submissions that refer to specific brands or licensed properties. We do this to avoid getting your hopes up for something we know we aren't able to make. In these cases, we already know the LEGO Group can't secure licensing rights to produce construction toys based on a particular brand or property, due to a conflicting interest with a third party.

If such a conflict goes away, we'll then be able to accept projects based on a particular brand or license.

...

Resolved Past Licensing Conflicts

We now welcome projects based on the following licenses that used to have conflicts:
  • Doctor Who - February 2014
Last updated February 25, 2014

This does not mean that Lego is definitely going to license and produce Doctor Who toys, but it does mean that they no longer consider it impossible.

Thursday, 11 July 2013 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Character have announced a special edition 12" Dalek to celebrate Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary.

Character: 12" British Icon Dalek (Credit: Character)For the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, what could be better for collectors than his ultimate foe in truly British styling; Character unveils its Doctor Who 12-inch British Icon Dalek

This ultimate Doctor Who collectable 12-inch Dalek has been produced exclusively in Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary year. Beautifully displayed in the Union Flag, it celebrates the Daleks as a British icon and is ideal gift for all Doctor Who fans. This limited edition free-wheeling Dalek features poseable arm, head and eye while us having the ability to voice 10 Dalek phrases with lights and sound FX.

The Daleks were created by the Kaled scientist, Davros as travel machines. Davros had deduced that the years of radiation and chemical poisoning from an ongoing war would lead his race to mutate into immobile organisms. The Dalek travel machines would house these creatures and allow the Kaleds to survive.

In the course of his experiments however, Davros deliberately removed what he considered to be debilitating emotions from the mutants and a force of evil was spawned!

The Doctor Who 12-inch British Icon Dalek will be available from late August. Suitable for ages 5 years and over it will be a must have for the many generations of fans that the Timelord has gained in the past 5 decades.

From June 2013, fans can regenerate their treasured collections with a new Doctor Who 3.75 inch scale action figure. Character 3.75" Figures: Ice Warrior, Weeping Angel, Doctor, Clara, Cyberman, Dalek (Credit: Character)
Order from Forbidden Planet: Ice Warrior, Weeping Angel, The Doctor, Clara, Cyberman, Dalek

Explaining the change of figures from the previous 5" collection, Character said:
This new action figure collection is presented in 3.75 inch scale and many of you will be asking why the size of the figures has changed for this new series. Quite simply, with this being the 50th year of Doctor Who we wanted to refresh our product offering, and create something new and exciting for avid fans and children to collect. Our research also showed that many children today are collecting smaller figures and boy's action figures across the market are moving to this size. The new figures are compatible with other action figures and playsets in the marker, so kids can easily mix and match their play scenarios which are an integral part of the play pattern.

Of course there are many benefits too. The new collection is more affordable to the millions of fans, however more importantly absolutely no compromise has been made on the detail and quality.

In addition to the individual figures, Character have also created two "Timezone Playsets", themed around "Cold War" and "Dalek Invasion":

1983 - In the cold waters of the Southern Arctic Ocean, a Russian submarine returning from patrol takes on board a suspicious cargo, and the Doctor is reunited with one of his oldest foes. [order]
